Benioff received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Southern California, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, in 1986. He graduated from Burlingame High School in 1982. Benioff was raised in a Jewish family in the San Francisco Bay Area.
